About STEM Demystified
STEM Demystified was created by Juliana Smith CITP MBCS, a passionate STEM Ambassador for STEM Learning UK and Trustee at the charity Technology Books for Children. Originally from Brazil, Juliana has built a career spanning more than 15 years in STEM. With a background in Physical Oceanography, she has worked across multiple sectors, from ocean researcher to Marine Seismic Navigator.
Now based in Manchester, UK, Juliana has specialised in Business Intelligence and Data Visualisation Design.
STEM Demystified began as a one-year LinkedIn newsletter (April 2024–April 2025), where Juliana interviewed women from diverse STEM backgrounds, cultures and motivations. Although created for an adult audience, the project was always driven by a bigger purpose: making real STEM stories accessible to school-age learners who rarely see women represented in these fields.
In 2026, the project was selected for SheBuilds Season 3, a global programme by Lovable supporting women and non-binary founders building social-impact solutions, providing the support and resources to bring this project live!
Equality in STEM means helping every young person truly see themselves there. When representation is real, confidence and curiosity grow, and so does their future.
Our Mission
Our mission is to make real STEM representation accessible to every young learner. STEM Demystified exists to bring the stories of women in STEM closer to the classroom, the home and the hands of curious minds who rarely see themselves reflected in these fields.
By combining storytelling, global perspectives and interactive exploration, we aim to spark curiosity, build confidence and help young people recognise that STEM is not distant or exclusive, it's a world they can belong to.
Our Global Reach
STEM Demystified brings together the voices of more than 40 women in STEM, representing 19 countries across six continents. Each story offers a window into a different culture, discipline and pathway, from engineering in South Africa to pharmaceutical sciences in Bangladesh, from ocean research in Brazil to AI engineering in Pakistan.
These stories aren't just profiles; they're lived experiences that show young people what STEM looks like in the real world.
They highlight the challenges, the breakthroughs, the unexpected turns and the moments of courage that shape a STEM career. By exploring this global collection, learners begin to see that there is no single "right" way into STEM. There are many. And somewhere in these stories, every young person can find a voice that feels familiar, a spark that makes them think, "Maybe this could be me too."
