Portrait of Ifeoluwa Oshodi

Ifeoluwa Oshodi

Laboratory and Metabolic Medicine

  • Nigeria
  • Laboratory Medicine
  • Chemical Pathologist

From an early age, Ifeoluwa loved mathematics and solving problems, and she initially thought this might lead her towards chemical or computer engineering. Instead, her path took her towards medicine - specifically, a fascinating area called Laboratory Medicine, which involves studying samples like blood to understand what’s happening inside the body and help doctors make the right decisions for their patients.

Ifeoluwa went on to become a Chemical Pathologist, earning a Fellowship in Metabolic Medicine - a huge academic and professional achievement. She has continued to specialise further, moving into molecular diagnostics, which uses incredibly precise techniques to detect diseases at a molecular level, helping create more accurate and personalised medical treatments.

Sometimes, the most important ingredient for success isn’t a single big achievement - it’s steady, consistent progress, made one step at a time.

Ifeoluwa’s journey hasn’t always been a straight line, and she’s faced delays and difficult decisions along the way. But she describes herself as someone who is always climbing - getting closer to her goals, even if she hasn’t reached the very top yet. She finds huge motivation in seeing patients who need exactly the kind of medical solutions she has trained to provide.

Two figures have particularly inspired Ifeoluwa: Marie Curie, for her determination and pioneering work in physics and chemistry, and Folorunsho Alakija, a Nigerian businesswoman known for becoming one of the wealthiest women in Africa - proof, to Ifeoluwa, that success in any field is possible regardless of where you start.

Her advice to you

Her advice to children is refreshingly simple: science offers a way to provide real solutions for people and for the world, and working in STEM can be genuinely fun and fulfilling.
